The Curtain Falls plot

Sarah Crabtree, a retired actress, is at her wits' end. She's old, broke, and the boarding house where she lives has closed down. She writes to her old friend, Lady Scorsby, for help, but she is missing. Sarah decides to impersonate her and moves into the house of Scorsby's cousin, John, who last saw her when he was a boy. He's not doing well: the bank won't renew his loans, his wife is cheating on him, his son Barry is indebted to a rogue gambler and his daughter Dorothy Lee wants to marry a man without any social status. Sarah decides to use her borrowed identity and acting skills to set things right.
