The Cheat plot
Carmelita De Cordoba, the quirky daughter of a wealthy South American businessman, is in Paris sorting out her trousseau in connection with her upcoming wedding. But she doesn't really want to marry the man - an associate of her father's, who is much older than her - and when she meets the American Dudley Drake, she falls in love with him. Carmelita runs off with Dudley and her father doesn't want to hear from her anymore. A gambler and unable to survive on Dudley's low salary, Carmelita hatches a plan.
