Gordon Shaw was an aviator and was killed in the First World War. Nina (Shearer) loved him and wanted to marry him before going to war, but her father forbade this. Charlie is a friend of hers but Nina doesn't love him and he is too shy to say he loves her. Sam (Kirkland) is her husband and she loves him less and less after learning that mental illness runs in his family, preventing them from having children. Because she wants children, she has a secret affair with Ned (Gable), and Ned wants her to leave her husband for him. Nina continues to play with the emotions of the three men because she still only loves Gordon.
