The first manned mission to Mars, a joint venture of NASA and the European Space Agency, has almost reached its goal. Suddenly disaster strikes. The landing module crashes onto the surface of the Red Planet. Five of the six astronauts survive the blow. Engineer Luca Baglioni only believes in the hard and fast laws of science. Doctor Jenny Johnson is a sensitive, religious woman. Astrobiologist Fidel Rodrigo is a normal man in an abnormal situation and the idealistic geologist Herbert Sagan makes his childhood dream come true with this journey. Susana Sanchez, the module's young pilot, takes charge of the mission after the captain's death. It will be years before rescue comes. There is only one alternative left for the stranded: three of them must die so that two can survive.
