Something Borrowed plot

"It's a thin line between love and friendship."

As she approaches her thirtieth birthday, Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) feels like her life hasn't turned out the way she'd hoped. Despite a good job as a lawyer and fun friends, including extravagant best friend Darcy (Kate Hudson), Rachel increasingly realizes after a night out that she is going home alone again. However, this changes after the birthday party that Darcy organizes for her: Rachel ends up in bed with Dex, a former classmate and ... Darcy's current fiancé. Startled, they wonder how this could have happened and they try to forget the incident. But soon both of them start to doubt: was it actually a mistake?

I like Kate Hudson, but here even she was exhausting. Furthermore, the characters were rather weak shallow and empty and the ending is a complete deception. The only plus is that Kate Hudson is still a lot of fun to watch, but unfortunately that can't be said about this film.

Mediocre

“You're an asshole!”
“Yeah, maybe I am. But i'm the only asshole here who gives a shit about you.”

Nice rom com. The problem with Something Borrowed is that the wrong actors got the lead roles. Because John Krasinski is the MVP of the movie, but he's tucked away in a supporting role. Goodwin and especially Egglesfield are boring and mediocre, and what Kate Hudson is doing she probably still doesn't know. Is this the same actress from Almost Famous? The ending sucks too, and I was hoping that Ethan and Rachel would get back together (although he probably deserves better). Let that boring Dex sink into the shit. A missed opportunity.

Decent rom-com.

But one that doesn't even bother to come up with an original detail. You seem to have seen all the plot lines, "surprises", developments and characters before, in very similar films, books and series. So food for the real enthusiast.

So expect a lot of predictability, an ending that you see coming from the first minute and a combo of romance and humor that is almost scientific. But luckily the roles are nicely filled, and there is a summery atmosphere that makes it all easy to look away. The nice thing about these kinds of films is that the drama is never really dramatic, and often does not last longer than a minute or two.

If you don't like rom-coms, don't watch this one anyway, but otherwise it's a decent movie. Not one that stands out positively in any way, but just does its thing as a snack. Average genre filler in other words.

2.5*
