The young American Jane Callaghan travels to Russia. On her journey to this new world, she shares the compartment with a group of young, unruly cadets. Among them is Andrey Tolstoy, an elegant and passionate young man. At the Moscow train station, Jane joins Douglas McCracken, an eccentric inventor. Hoping to meet the handsome young cadet Tolstoy again, Jane pays him a visit at the military academy. Here she is introduced to General Radlov, the man she has to seduce for McCracken, Jane soon succeeds in seducing the rather clumsy Radlov. The latter asks the cadet to accompany him to McCracken to read his marriage proposal to Jane, ignoring Tolstoy's feelings for her...
