Ben Gazzara delivers one of the best performances of his career as the charismatic and pragmatic Jack Flowers, a pimp who commands great respect in Singapore's red-light district, where he knows everyone and gets along well with people. He hopes to amass a fortune quickly so he can retire, so when CIA agent Eddie Schuman [Peter Bogdanovich] offers him a substantial sum of money to take compromising photos of a senator's [George Lazenby] sexual escapades, Jack is all ears. But he knows he is putting his reputation on the line with this action. Is that a price he is willing to pay?

Bogdanovich made the film entirely on location with a considerable number of local residents in small roles or as extras. Gazzara appears to be completely at ease and contrasts effectively with Denholm Elliot as the friendly but somewhat bourgeois friend who visits once a year. It is a shame that this is one of Bogdanovich's lesser-known films, as it deserves more recognition than it has received so far. In fact, this is one of his best works!

Ben Gazzara, in his own phlegmatic style, remains in the sultry atmosphere of "The Killing of a Chinese Bookie," and although this "Saint-Jack" appealed to me less, it is Ben who once again proves he can handle such a complex role with ease.

The film goes on for a very long time, and actually right up to the rather surprising ending, observing the main character in his dealings with people of all kinds and intentions, whether or not yielding to them, with only the role portrayed by Denholm Elliott briefly stepping alongside that Gazzara.

Good film about an opportunistic American who makes money as a pimp in Singapore. Not really a story, but a well-portrayed protagonist. His friendly demeanor with everyone he tries to keep happy. Ben Gazzara is not only well-cast but portrays the role excellently. Good location work in Singapore makes the film quite authentic.
