Resurrezione plot

Prince Necklivdov sits on a jury to judge prostitute Katjusha Maslova, who is accused of robbing and poisoning a client. Necklivdov is shocked when he recognizes her as a servant from his uncle's villa whom he once fell in love with, but had to leave behind to become a brilliant soldier in Moscow. When the jury hears that the prostitute has been dumped by an aristocrat as a pregnant girl, she wants to acquit her. But a formality leads to Katjusha being sentenced to hard labor in Siberia. Necklivdov does everything to get her free and even offers to marry her. She refuses, even though he travels with him to Siberia. To rid Necklivdov of his guilt, she marries her fellow inmate Simonson.
