Parentage plot
In the town of Owenton live the Smith, Brown, and Melton families. Melton is the town banker, and Brown and Smith are partners in the real estate business, but their temperaments and business tactics are as different as night and day. Brown is dominant, aggressive, and self-centered, while Smith is cheerful and honorable. A baby is expected in each family home, and the environment in which each of the two boys is raised is reflected in their later lives as they grow up, attend school, and later enter business. Brown's son, a secretive petty thief as a boy and later an immoral young man, loses the affection of Agnes Melton, the banker's daughter. The Smith boy, however, develops into an upright young man who makes his mark in business and wins Agnes's love.
