Oxen plot
Famines ravaged Europe in the second half of the 19th century. Around Christmas 1868, the need is so great in Sweden that employee Helge Roos, out of desperation, slaughters one of his employer's oxen. Although Helge's family is saved, the envy and jealousy of fellow villagers causes the Reverend (Von Sydow) to report Helge, who is then sentenced to a lengthy prison sentence. His wife is forced into prostitution. The pastor regrets it and tries to get a pardon.
