One day, white writer Kent Nerburn receives a call from the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota. Dan, a 95-year-old Lakota Indian, asks for his help. Nerburn's curiosity is piqued. Upon arrival, Dan hands over a shoebox full of loose bills. He asks to make a book out of it. Nerburn declines the question, but just as he is about to leave, his truck fails. He is picked up by Dan and his friend Grover. It's the start of a trip through the country of the Native Americans in the old Buick of Grover.
