Hannah Thomas lives in a small kitchenette with her three children, Vera, Buddy and her oldest son, 25-year-old Bigger, in 1940s Chicago. Bigger is offered a job as a driver for a white family. However, his life takes a dramatic turn when he accidentally kills the family's teenage daughter and then tries to cover it up.
