A drama that highlights historical events is not always a great success. Logically, there is often no tension because the outcome is known. It also often happens that the motives and inner life of a historical character are exposed. Very speculative and rarely really interesting.

Moonshot tells the story of Apollo 11 and the first moon landing quite solidly. The story is sometimes told somewhat from Buzz Aldrin's perspective but uses little or no dramatic trickery or dramatic moralizing. It remains quite factual. Course and outcome are known. Still, it's exciting. The film adaptation of this historical event looks fresh and occasionally makes you forget the facts. When landing on the moon, I even thought for a moment: surely Aldrin will push his fellow astronaut aside and be the first to descend the stairs to the moon's surface? An exciting thought. That didn't happen, but it does indicate that the film succeeds in drawing the viewer into the story.

Of course, Moonshot is ultimately about the flight to the moon and the landing. Before then, however, the film takes the time to get to know the trio of astronauts better and does not fail to capture the atmosphere of the late 1960s. The three actors who portray Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins succeed in portraying their historical characters factually and convincingly. It is a pleasant run-up to the action.

Richard Dale is the director's name. He makes a film without frills. Without exaggeration. Somewhat documentary-like. Solid, sober, factual and (despite the familiar progression) exciting... Fun to watch.
