Manuela plot

James Prothero is forty-three years old and addicted to alcohol. He is the captain of a steamboat that has to leave South America for Britain and he is tired of transporting goods back and forth around the world. Then he meets Manuela, a beautiful native girl who was smuggled aboard by one of his crew members, and comes to realize that she too is a lost soul. Gradually, a love affair develops between them, and Prothero becomes dangerously blind to the responsibilities of his position...
