Manas plot

The island of Marajó in the Amazon rainforest. Marcielle, nicknamed Tielle, lives on the banks of the river with her father, mother and three siblings. Encouraged by her mother’s words, she idolizes her older sister who supposedly escapes her reality by “finding a good man” on the barges that sail the region. As Tielle grows older, her idealized visions shatter and she finds herself caught between two violent environments. Increasingly concerned about her younger sister and the bleak future that awaits them, she decides to confront the oppressive system that controls her family and the women in their community.

Thirteen-year-old Marcielle [Jamilli Corréa] lives with her parents on Marajó Island, a Brazilian island in the Amazon with a strict Christian community and a lack of future prospects. Now that she's reached adolescence, she discovers the dark sides of the patriarchy in which she grew up and seeks support to escape it. A controversial theme that Brennand addresses respectfully. Corréa also delivers a strong performance, but Brennand could have trimmed it down a bit.

A beautiful drama about a culture I'm unfamiliar with. It's beautiful how the film shows that the main character clearly feels that what her father is doing to her is wrong, even though it's tolerated and even considered fairly normal in her community. Despite the weight of the theme, it was also an almost enjoyable film at times, with plenty of lighthearted, warm moments and beautiful imagery.
