Madadayo plot

This film tells the story of Professor Uehida Hykken-sama, in Gotemba, around the 1940s. He was a university professor until an air raid, after which he left there to become a writer. His humor, way of life and wisdom make him very popular with his students. Every year his former students celebrate his birthday, where they exclaim 'Mahda kai?' (not yet?), only to hear him yell 'Madada yo!' (no not yet!).

Murakami's last. And not very interesting. Slow, sometimes even a bit boring and also visually there is little to really enjoy. Only about half way through when time goes on and the 50s and 60s break in and there is a clear reference to Ozu's films in terms of camera work and interior shots, it becomes a bit more fascinating in that area. But otherwise a very easy film that is okay with reasonable acting, but also slackens every time. The first hour is always a repetition of moves and the second hour is better but no longer works after that first hour. And then those 130+ minutes are really too much. 2.0*.
