"A love they never imagined. A summer they never forgot."
Chase has been a resident of Martha's Vineyard all her life, a town that has rapidly become prosperous. She is married to the dutiful Richard. Chase's aversion to the artificial leads to a violent mental breakdown. Richard hires nurse Elizabeth to help Chase. The disillusioned Chase treats her very badly at first, but both women soon discover how much they have in common. A strong bond develops between the two.
