Like Wandel's first film, Un Monde (2021), this second film is social realist in the style of the Dardenne brothers. This time, we follow nurse Lucy in the children's ward of a hospital. It turns out that behind every case lies problems for which social services, and sometimes even the police or a psychologist, are needed, so that the hospital can literally only provide a band-aid. The film focuses primarily on a disturbed mother who starves her son, with Lucy becoming a bit too emotionally involved and breaking numerous protocols in an attempt to save the boy, facing the familiar dilemma: is it in the son's best interest to separate him from her "bad" (overprotective) mother, or not? The film does its best to engage the viewer emotionally, but it's much less successful than in Un Monde, where we literally observe the child from the child's perspective, and the bullying at school is made palpable. L'Intérêt d'Adam essentially faces the same problem – protocols sometimes stand in the way of a good solution – but perhaps because in Lucy's case no good solution is possible, it made me rather apathetic about the choice that would be made.

Four-year-old Adam [Jules Delsart] is hospitalized for severe malnutrition. Adam's mother [Anamaria Vartolomei] is responsible for this neglect and is therefore only allowed to see Adam under strict conditions. But head nurse Lucy [Léa Drucker] protects her, believing it's in Adam's best interest. It's strange enough that an experienced manager would throw agreements and protocols overboard, but Wandel doesn't even make a serious attempt to explain why Lucy is so personally involved in this not-so-unique case. In terms of content, but especially in terms of film style, this is very similar to the superior Night Shift / Heldin, which released earlier that year.

The film is somewhat similar to Heldin in terms of theme and especially location. However, there are differences that all work against it. Visually, it's very gray and mostly dull (Heroin actually looked very nice), and at times a bit unbelievable. In this case, I found the nurse acting in ways I'd consider unprofessional, which doesn't do the film any good and wasn't necessary. The film is quite watchable, the acting is fine, but the irritation factor is too high. 2.5 stars.
