Karnaval plot
Carnival is celebrated every year in the northern French city of Dunkerque. Larbi, a second-generation Algerian, finds herself in the festivities, in which all morals seem absent. In the carnival frenzy, Larbi gets a kiss from Bea. Larbi was actually on his way to Marseille to start a new life there, but Bea's kiss makes him linger in the carnival-haunted Dunkirk. The desperation of the locals, who celebrate their displeasure with life with a drunken costume party, does not make Dunkirk a very safe place for Larbi. Yet he defies suspicious looks and remarks to be reunited with his Bea. It doesn't bother him that the aggressive colossus Christian stands in the way and he bravely works his way through the exuberant crowd. Bea doesn't understand what Larbi wants from her, but she's flattered by the sincerity of his emotions and fed up with Christian's frustrations. When Christian is fired because he would rather celebrate Carnival than work, he goes crazy. Wanting to prevent worse, Bea calls in Larbi.
