This is one of the most boring and pointless movies I have ever seen. It is said to be loosely based on the descent into a cave in southern Italy by cavers from northern Italy in 1961, but there is no tension or dramatization of the adventure. In fact, there is not even any dialogue, but only images of a light in a cave and the cows in the meadow around the cave. And a local man who makes strange noises and dies. I didn't see anything in the movie that even came close to what would spark interest.

In 1961, local shepherds [Antonio and Nicola Lanza] discovered a hole in the Pollino Plateau in Calabria. A group of young cavers decide to completely map the hole. The first half hour consists exclusively of living postcards in which nothing of any importance happens. The rest of the film consists of alternating shots in which the cavers crawl deeper and deeper into the hole. In other words: almost complete darkness in which nothing interesting can be seen for the layman. This is alternated with images of the dying shepherd lying on his bed. Zero story, zero dialogue (apart from some Italian shouts that were probably deliberately not subtitled), zero reasons to start this. Although: it could well be a miracle cure for insomnia.

Slightly less enthusiastic than some here, but I am convinced of the strength of this documentary film about a group of cavers in southern Italy. Particularly beautiful visually. Nice editing, calm pace tailored to the residents there, beautiful shots and so on. Very atmospheric and cinematographically strong.

A documentary film without words. One that lets the images speak and it succeeds. Observational cinema in which you have to immerse yourself. Pretty nice!
