Human Affairs plot
Sidney, a playwright, and Lucinda, a theater actress, are a married couple who are unable to have a child. To achieve this, they rely on a surrogate mother, 26-year-old Genevieve. She is from France and now lives in Vermont. Genevieve is invited to stay with the couple in New York for a weekend as she begins the fourth month of her pregnancy. It's a busy and stressful time for Sidney and Lucinda, as they are both involved in rehearsals for Sidney's play. Lucinda does not know that Sidney has been in regular contact with Genevieve during the surrogacy. This seems to have started as a friendly correspondence but developed into something romantic.
