Haïti Chérie plot

"Drama"

Jean-Baptiste and Magdaleine are a married couple. They both work on a sugar plantation in the Dominican Republic. When their baby dies of starvation, they start thinking about what to do next. Magdaleine can't take it anymore and considers returning to Haiti. However, Jean-Baptiste hopes for better times for his wife and himself, perhaps by finding another job. An attempted rape by one of the plantation guards speeds things up. With the help of Ernesto, an army doctor, they manage to escape with some others. Among them is Pierre, a 14-year-old cane cutter who falls in love with Magdaleine. The group travels through the Dominican Republic in hopes of forgetting their crippled lives of injustice.
