"Prove them wrong."
At 18, Diana is about to be expelled from school for fighting, her mother is dead and she knows from her own experience that men can cause misery. When she picks up her younger brother from the gym where he is boxing, she decides she wants to start boxing herself. After some hesitation, Hector decides to train her.

Oops, another strong film that is brought down in the mood for the wrong reasons. I thought it was an incredibly strong film about femininity and strength, about how a young woman literally manages to fight herself above her male friends, only to discover that it is not tolerated socially after all. Painful realistic.

Underrated, powerful, well-directed movie with an excellent Michelle Rodriguez with the right attitude (love to see her in movies anyway, but I think this is the first lead role I see her in). Thick 4*.

Great movie by Karyn Kusama. Girlfight isn't very original and it looks a bit amateurish at times (especially the boxing scenes), but Rodriguez carries the film very well and Diana is also a character you want to keep following. I didn't want the romantic subplot and Douglas isn't the best actor I've ever seen, but everything about Diana and her family problems and dream of making it as a boxer keeps Girlfight interesting to watch.
