Es Geht Einer vor die Hunde plot

Germany in the Great Depression of the late 1920s. Wilhelm Thiele becomes unemployed, he loses his unemployment benefits because of his undeclared work and finally, all this negative publicity puts an end to his side income as a locksmith. But he does not give up and develops even in his hopeless misery. Thousands have experienced the same, because they cannot escape the social decline. To escape unemployment and hunger, many of them end up in brown Nazi uniforms.
