There are people who regard Au Hasard Balthazar as a masterpiece. Such spirits are most likely responsible for the acclaim this film received. It concerns a circus donkey "with melancholy eyes" who sets off after the circus goes bankrupt and experiences all kinds of 'adventures'. That is to say: he stares pityingly ahead, knocks over some things, walks through meadow and hobbles through the screen at ease. Clumsy point-of-view shots are supposed to make us feel like we're inside the donkey's head. A donkey kicking in there. The jury of the Cannes Film Festival awarded this with the jury prize, together with the equally grossly overrated Triangle of Sadness.

A typical one side/the other side film.

On the one hand, in an alternation of abstract and realistic images, the film gives a sketch of how people literally use animals - in this case a donkey: from circus attraction to beast of burden, lucky doll, cuddly toy to meat bomb (and I may be forgetting something). The donkey is most resigned to it, but as in an audiovisual experiment, director Skolimowski conjures up images on the canvas that could very well reflect the animal's feelings.

On the other hand, 86 minutes turned out to be too long for me to keep watching fascinated. At a certain point 'I knew it' and the images become beautiful films.

Shame.

Nice idea, not everyday although not completely unique either. Substantively strong, but as a film this comes across less. Mostly messy. Then again dreamy images (sometimes beautiful, that is), then raw realism. The film is a collection of scenes that together last 86 minutes, but even that short running time does not always manage to captivate and some swear among themselves. I also lacked involvement. Also a pity about the somewhat oppressive image format (I've seen that format more often recently, why not? People used to understand how to use that format properly, now it's mainly a trick that is often not my taste) and the dark filter, visually often very boring. Now I am generous: 2.5*.

I have no idea why this movie was made or is playing in theaters (and even winning awards): there's nothing captivating about the movie. Nor the story - a circus donkey is 'liberated' by activists and then experiences 'adventures' in human land or is actually mainly a spectator, because the film mainly shows something of man and his not always friendly interaction with animals (and other people) in which the donkey himself especially longs for the circus artist who worked with him and who cared for him – nor the way in which it is portrayed is special.
