En Toiu Onna plot

Kenzan, a high-ranking official, is disgraced and his family, including four-year-old En, are exiled to a remote coastal town. En grows up there, totally isolated from the outside world. When En turns 26 she gets in touch with the young student Taizan through an exchange of letters. However, she is never allowed to see him because of her banishment. When the ban is finally lifted after forty years, a disaster happens for En and the roles are reversed: Taizan falls into disgrace and is in turn sentenced to seclusion.
