In the Vienna of 1848, freedom of speech is something people can only dream of. Despite the strict censorship, the critical comedian Johann Nepomuk Nestroy (Fritz Karl) achieves great success in the theater. He always goes one step further with his jokes hidden at the rigid regime, so that serious problems with the censorship cannot be avoided. Meanwhile, his love life is not without fits and starts.
