Deserted plot

A sweating, exhausted man walks laboriously and alone through an empty, sun-drenched desert. In his hand a large, full bottle of water. Every now and then he twists the cap off the bottle and almost takes a sip. Again and again he resists temptation with great difficulty, despite his terrible thirst. Despair slowly but surely takes possession of him. Yet he drinks nothing. Why not? What are the consequences if he does?
