42-year-old Rick Paulusma [Sanne den Hartogh] has been trying to get permission for voluntary euthanasia for seven years. After 20 years of research, complex diagnoses and multiple attempts to end his life in a different way, his patience has run out. His parents Aagje [Renée Soutendijk] and Toon [Raymond Thiry] try to remain as positive as possible under the circumstances, but when Rick finally gets the final approval and his death is actually imminent, everything changes. Soutendijk and Thiry are a match made in heaven in this family drama that only gets going after the approval of the euthanasia. Den Hartogh is less convincing, especially in the first half.

A compelling film that you won't let go of quickly. The story is told from the perspective of the parents. That gives a completely different perspective, which really gives you a different story. The film is documentary-like with cinematic effects. That sticks.

This really touched me, I was crying in the audience. It is a very difficult subject to deal with, but by telling the story of René Johannesma - called Rick Paulusma here - it was still very successful. The film tells very poignantly how the parents of a son with a deep death wish deal with this. What can they do for their child and how should they come to terms with this themselves? Are there any alternatives?

A masterful cast and an honest direction build up to a very moving end result. Read my review here.
