After 'Spice World' (1997) I of course had to see the Britney Spears vehicle 'Crossroads' (2002). And this musical road trip is also a nice chunk of nostalgia for my carefree childhood. Actually not as bad as the many Raspberry Awards (the Oscars for bad films) of the time suggest. It's an interchangeable, predictable story about teenage girls who find each other on their 'journey' from puberty to adulthood. Especially the scenes in which they cruise on the highway to LA in that open car, while they sing along well-known pop songs from that year, are quite atmospheric. Just carefree teenage fun, with enough early 00s for the nostalgic thirty-something that I am.

Crossroads is a film that is a bit messy, but in the end it can still fill in a reasonable core. It's easy to burn down a movie starring Spears. As Spears you are an easy target, but with the media that Spears gets these days, it is still difficult to watch these kinds of films.

A lot of pace and probably also the intention to experience a lot of adventure, which is then only not experienced. We get a kind of road movie, but in the end it is mainly the personal drama of the characters that takes precedence. That ensures that the constantly less interesting things are put forward and that works against the film.

Well acted, remarkably well even. Spears actually still carries the film, only the adventure they experience and the way they get to their destination is just too little challenging and compelling to keep following with pleasure. You will easily forget the film, but that does not mean that it is easy to look away.
