1920s Arkansas. The alcoholic Matt Ballot returns home after 12 years of wandering through various states. His wife Bess has been able to raise their two daughters, ages 14 and 12, into exemplary children without her husband. Matt is spoken of with disdain in the village. Despite this, Matt wants to win the love of his family again and be respected by the villagers again.
