Good.

A bit like A Quiet Place, but I'm not that familiar with the genre of thriller/horror-with-sci-fi sauce, so I haven't seen many others of its kind (perhaps fortunately).
The full 2 hours is just a bit too long, but otherwise Bird Box does what it's supposed to do. It is in any case less thriller/horror than expected, the focus is more on the group dynamics in a post-apocalyptic world. That offers little new under the sun, but in the end it is just neatly done. Interspersed with the river scenes (I would have expected more variation here), the pace remains fairly good.

I don't really agree with the ending. It's quite tacky and dramatic, and a hint to the how or what would have been nice too. All right, otherwise Susanne Bier's choices are defensible. Also a good role by Sandra Bullock, a bit too often a hit-or-miss actress for me.

3.5

In 'Bird Box' (2018), a paranormal entity has humanity in its grip as virtually every person who beholds the creature is overcome with the impulse to brutally commit suicide. I have a weakness for filmmakers who impose a 'disability' on themselves and implement a concept consistently. Likewise, we remain in the dark about what this hidden threat looks like. Unlike most monster films (where the main focus is on the spectacle), the focus here is on paranoia and the creative ways in which Malorie (Sandra Bullock) has to find solutions to her vision problem. 'Bird Box' (2018) is an imperfect film because the three different timelines give away at a too early stage what the course of the story will be. For the same reason, the characters in the middle part mainly feel like filler, because you can easily guess what their fate will be. Still, I did enjoy the river and forest scenes where Malorie is alone with the two kids. Bullock plays a fine role as a mourner who has to be careful that her hardness doesn't turn against her one day.

The 53-year-old co-producer Bullock is in fact too old to play the part of a mother of two children aged 5 years. who, blindfolded, must try to flee an unseen enemy who drives people insane if they only look at it. But Bullock lands one of her best roles in a long time in this adaptation of the 2014 bestseller of the same name. She gets help from a cast that lends dignity to what could have been caricatured roles in some cases. Especially John Malkovich, Jacki Weaver, Lil Rel Howery, Tom Hollander and last but not least Pruitt Taylor Vince contribute to an often very exciting thriller with satirical elements, every now and then a pleasant touch of humor and an extremely moving ending. Vivien Lyra Blair is notable as Bullock's five-year-old daughter. Bier knows how to build up the tension enormously, thanks in part to the effective score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross and the scenes on the water are excellently portrayed by Salvatore Totino.
