Attenberg plot

"Sexy, strange and beautifully deranged."

Marina, 23, grows up with her father, an architect, in an archetypal industrial city by the sea. She finds the human species strange and unpleasant and therefore keeps a certain distance. She observes humans through the songs of Suicide, Sir David Attenborough's wildlife documentaries about mammals, and the sex education she receives from her only friend, Bella. A stranger arrives in town and challenges her to a game of foosball on her own table. Her father, meanwhile, prepares ritually for his exodus from the twentieth century, which he considers “overvalued”. Caught between the two men and her friend Bella, Marina investigates the wondrous mystery of the human fauna.

In the vein of Dogtooth and Alpeis, but more subtle than the former and less bitter than the latter. Plot-wise a coming-of-age drama, but the events that are normally presented with a lot of drama - budding sexuality, standing-on-one's-own-feet (here abruptly by the death of the father) - are dealt with completely emotionlessly. This concerns both the acting and the dry style of the film itself. A principle that is also followed in a certain sense in Dogtooth and Alpeis. For me it works well, it seems to make the film very unpredictable, perhaps because normally you can read from the emotions what you should feel and where the film wants to take you. There is more room for projection here, which is why - this was especially noticeable in Dogtooth - people experience the film completely differently. For one they are heavy dramas, for the other black comedies. I tend more towards the latter, but of course it is a bit of both.

Not bad, as far as I'm concerned. Attenberg is a special, slightly crazy film. It is artistic and unique. I sometimes found it a bit childish, but when I look at the whole I have to say that I find it an entertaining film that I can certainly appreciate. I can imagine that this genre is not for everyone, but if you like unusual art house films, it is recommended. Nice music too. Especially "Tous les garcons et les filles" stays with me, the song that Marina and Bella sing along to when they walk outside. Beautiful scene. On second thought, I change my 3* to 3.5*.

Extremely laborious and tiring film about a young woman who, with the death of her father in sight, gradually wants to make an attempt to finally become an adult. The only highlight: the evening walk to the music of Françoise Hardy's “Tous les garçons et les filles”, because that is simply a beautiful chanson.

During the French kissing lesson in the opening scene I already had a dark suspicion that it would not come to anything. Too kitschy for my taste. Ariane Labed has made more beautiful films.
