Stephen Ashe, a lawyer, successfully defends mobster Ace Wilfong in a murder case. Stephen Ashe's daughter Jan Ashe breaks off his engagement to polo player Dwight Winthrop and has an affair with Ace Wilfong. But when she wants to end this relationship, she finds it isn't as easy as she thought. Winthrop can't stand Ace having a hold on her and kills him, after which he wins her love back. The question now is whether his lawyer Stephen will win this murder case.

A nuanced drama about an alcoholic lawyer and his loving but headstrong daughter, who threatens to lose her place in the legitimate world due to her passionate feelings for a ruthless underworld figure.
A somewhat scruffy Lionel Barrymore was rewarded with an Oscar for his remarkable role, reportedly partly because his extensive closing argument in the courtroom was filmed in one long, continuous take. The role of a free-spirited woman suits the always somewhat dignified Norma Shearer wonderfully, chicer and sexier than ever in beautifully tailored dresses. This is also the film that promoted Clark Gable from supporting roles to "top of the bill" for the rest of his career. A fascinating film for several reasons.
