The story of this film consists of episodes from Moscow and rural life. The beginning, in which three characters happen to meet in an anonymous bar, sets the tone for the rest of the film. But do they also speak the truth? The viewer feels in the dark. It isn't until later, when the trio splits up, that we get more clues about these strangers, especially about the possibly cloned young woman. 4 is a film that plays with subjects such as cloning, the social and political changes in Russia, her countryside and her contemporary citizens who all try to survive in their own way.

Yeah, this is a weird movie! I found it quite hopeful at the beginning with that nice, long, drawn-out conversation in the bar. It is mysterious, and there is a whole story told about a cloning program. However, Chetyre became increasingly rudderless and, above all, weirder . I didn't think all those antics were entirely successful. A few pigs perished during production, and you get to see them inside out. You really have to be able to handle that. I also found those little old ladies quite annoying and nerve-wracking.

Fortunately, there is the stunning Marina, a product of the cloning program, who makes the film still interesting. You learn something about her background, and a lengthy scene where you see her walking was actually the cinematic highlight. In terms of looks, Chetyre is spot on, but the rest is somewhat disappointing.

It has actually all been said here already. The second half is simply weak and completely negates what preceded it. A real, real shame, because there are some truly phenomenal scenes in the first hour. The abrupt opening scene, the conversation in the bar, but especially the walking scene halfway through is an absolute masterpiece. The way all those strange background noises form a sort of soundtrack in themselves was impressive. A magical moment.

So it's a shame that the director didn't continue that line in the second hour, leaving you instead stuck with a noisy, wrinkled nursing home until the very end. Otherwise, I certainly would have given it a higher rating than this generous 3.5*, because it is definitely a remarkable film. Perhaps in the future.

Long-winded, incredibly boring Russian film that completely loses its way, especially in the second hour. Initially, the characters and dialogue are bearable, but then things irrevocably grind to a halt and the film crawls towards a meaningless ending. Nice opening shot, by the way, which unfortunately is not representative of the rest of this blurry picture.
