The global slave trade has impacted human history in many ways, as well as having a lasting impact on agriculture and horticulture. While the French planters on the Caribbean island of Martinique built gardens, their enslaved workers relied on the medicinal wild herbs that grew like hedges on the edge of the property. Herb cultivation is now one of the means by which the people of Martinique defend themselves against the disastrous consequences for the ecology and public health of the use of pesticides on banana plantations.
