Wien Retour plot

Franz West (1909-1985) recalls his childhood in Vienna: the diversity of the Jewish population of the so-called Matzah Island, his devotion to the workers' movement of the Red Vienna and the rise of Austrian fascism and National Socialism. Beckermann interviews Franz West and draws a parallel between the disintegration of the Austrian workers' movement and the fate of the Jews in Vienna's interwar period.
