Water Hands plot
The originally Serbian director Vladimir Todorovic now lives and works in Singapore. The sailor central to this film made the same journey in the opposite direction and is now a stranger in the Serbian hinterland. While the images show the Balkan landscapes through which he travels, he recounts the folktales he has heard in voice-over. A soundtrack completes the ambiance, which emphasizes the sailor's eerie feeling: he increasingly questions the daily reality that awaits him at home. We see this in the second branch of Todorovic's narration: a woman answers the sailor's reflections with practical pleas for his return; she lures him as a mother, as a lover, as a homeland, while the gleaming skyscrapers and busy arteries dominate the nevertheless still images.
