“I envy the Japanese,” Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo. The exhibition on which this film is based – Van Gogh & Japan in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam – shows why. Although Van Gogh never visited Japan, this is the country with the greatest influence on him and his art. Van Gogh cannot be understood without knowing how Japanese art arrived in Paris in the mid-nineteenth century and the influence it had on artists such as Monet, Degas and, above all, Van Gogh. By visiting new galleries of Japanese art, Van Gogh created his own image of Japan. This unknown story about Van Gogh's art makes clear how important his fascination for Japan was.
