This portrait of black workers at the polling station at Tonsler Park in Charlottesville, Virginia was filmed on November 8, 2016, US Election Day, the day the battle between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton was decided. Kevin Jerome Averson records how the employees take an oath, how they watch rows of voters pass by and hand out ballots, without anyone seeming to be aware of the camera that stands motionless. Conversations turn to buzz, backs obscure the camera's view – this is democracy in practice, where every voice is one.
