The Birthday plot
According to Iranian medics who specialize in 'renovation operations', Iran is a paradise for transsexuals. While homosexuality is strictly prohibited in Iran, surgery to change the sex is allowed. In 'The Birthday', filmmakers Negin Kianfar and Daisy Mohr follow a young man in the period just before and after one of the surgeries to turn him into a woman. The main character's deeply religious parents, in particular, have a hard time with their son's transformation, but eventually accept it. Perhaps this has something to do with the fact that he had a boyfriend before he became a woman and that homosexuality in Iran is very dangerous. The friend of the transsexual also speaks. How does he experience the metamorphosis of his beloved? Through conversations with other transsexuals, including a woman who feels like a man, with doctors, clergy and other people involved, the documentary offers an insight into the phenomenon of transsexuality in a closed, Islamic society.
