Sovereign Son (2026)

This documentary is about Marcus. But why? The documentary also features communication between Marcus and the director regarding what should be included, yet the purpose of the documentary is not explicitly stated. Apparently, the director met him by chance and found him interesting, even though they emphasize at the end that they are opposites and do not understand each other. I haven't really been able to discover what is interesting about Marcus, and therefore why the director wanted to make a film about him. We learn that Marcus's father traveled extensively and impregnated girls everywhere, resulting in Marcus, among others. Marcus always searched for his father and, after he was found dead in a tent, continued to struggle with who he is and what it means to be a man, later turning his attention to the manosphere. Presumably, the director finds this interesting, but it doesn't yield much of interest: instead of an exploration of identity or masculinity, we only see Marcus talking about his life and noting himself that he resembles his father a lot as he hears more about him, including the restlessness that drives him to travel and the resistance against the world that ultimately isolates them. As a viewer, you get the feeling that things will end just as badly for Marcus as for his father. This suggests that nature has more influence on a person's personality than nurture, but at the same time, Marcus's struggle can also be interpreted as the result of the absence of a father—and thus nurture after all. I don't even know if the director has these questions in mind with her film: as far as I am concerned, the film lacks any clarity regarding what it wants to say or what the director is trying to convey.
