Soldier's Bones plot

In 1971, Newsweek journalist Alec Shimkin uncovered a secret American mission in Vietnam: Operation Speedy Express. War crimes were committed on a scale that dwarfed the notorious My Lai massacre. Yet, no one knew about Alec's Pulitzer Prize-winning scoop. Following Alec and his war obsession, we travel to the Mekong Delta in search of Speedy's deadly echo.

Alec Shimkin was barely twenty when he participated in the march from Selma to Birmingham. A sense of justice and the chance to escape his demanding father led Alec to enlist as a field medic in Vietnam. He soon began writing articles about his experiences. His most significant journalistic contribution was a detailed account of Operation Speedy Express, in which American and South Vietnamese troops were ordered from December 1968 to May 1969 to ensure that the death toll tipped in favor of the US. Shimkin was reported missing in December 1971. The makers of this documentary discovered where and when Alec was killed and buried. An accurate, honest document of a dark chapter in American history that received little publicity due to the uproar caused by the My Lai massacre in 1968. It is also a (slightly too) reverent portrait of an idealistic young man, driven by his sense of justice.
