Shahida plot
Israeli Natalie Assouline spent two years closely documenting the lives of a number of women held in an Israeli prison for being involved in terrorist attacks. What were their motives? Kahira, a mother of five, is serving three life sentences for smuggling a suicide bomber into downtown Jerusalem, where the man blew himself up, killing three people. Waffa was caught trying to carry out a suicide bombing at the hospital where she had been treated for six months after a serious accident. Samar made bombs and was arrested while pregnant with her first child, who is born in prison during the making of this film. The viewer witnesses the daily lives of these women and learns about the complexity of their actions. We hear about their political and religious ideology, but also about their distressing situation at home. Many of them were mistreated or abandoned by their husbands. A life in prison sometimes turns out to be a better alternative.
