Saudade do Futuro plot
Brazil's largest city, São Paulo, is a huge metropolis with a great diversity of people and cultures. In Saudade do Futuro, the filmmakers Marie-Clémence and Cesar Paes focus on the many emigrants from the northeast of the country who populate the city. They were driven from their native region by poverty and unemployment. "It doesn't even rain there in the rainy season," says one of them. Cesar Paes followed a number of these emigrants and recorded how, despite the sometimes appalling conditions under which they live, they build up a life and continue to believe in a bright future. The main characters are a number of troubadours - street musicians who, armed only with a tambourine and their improvised lyrics, take their audience along into the story of their culture and their nostalgia for their country of origin.
