"“it’s not nice?”"
On December 15, 1969, jazz pianist and bebop pioneer Thelonious Monk was a guest in Jazz Portrait on French television. Monk gave a concert and was interviewed in between. Filmmaker Alain Gomis has found the rough recording of that television program and through parts that were not broadcast at the time, he gives a completely different picture of what happened that Monday. Monk wanted to use the time to talk about social and racial unrest in the United States, while the program makers mainly wanted a pleasant television evening.
