Ransom '79 plot
In October 2022, Charlie Bird, the legendary Irish journalist, was faced with a devastating diagnosis: he was suffering from the early stages of Motor Neurone Disease (MND), a cruel degenerative condition that would severely limit his life expectancy. Still reeling from the news, he met with an old source, former head of the fraud unit Wille McGee, who passed on details of what Charlie believed could become one of the biggest stories of his career. In September 1979, the Minister for Agriculture received an anonymous letter. If he did not hand over £5 million, the letter read, the dreaded foot-and-mouth virus would be deliberately unleashed on Ireland, an act of criminal terrorism that would devastate the struggling Irish economy. This documentary follows the increasingly frail Charlie, charting his investigation and reconstructing the improbable chain of events that unfolded over four decades ago.
