On April 5, 1980, 4 school friends—Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Michael Stipe—stepped onstage at a friend's birthday party. The band, then formed, REM stayed together for 30 years and would change the face of rock music forever. When REM released its first single in July 1981, it was a few weeks before MTV would broadcast its first music video. MTV would then follow the band and the musicians in great detail: their music, their story, up to and including their decision to split up after 30 years.
