Plastic Planet plot
"The hidden side of the plastic"
As a child, director Boote was fascinated by his grandfather's exaggerated admiration for the wonders of plastic. It seemed like anything could be made from this material that would make modern life easier, cheaper, and even healthier. Educational short films and old commercials from the 1950s further explain the wonderful plastic, with its 500-year best-before date. But Boote reveals that the magic of the time was mostly whipped up by the industry and there are still too few legal regulations. For example, plastic is still combined with toxic additives. Boote visits producers, the plastic-strewn desert where Lawrence of Arabia was shot, and the Pacific Ocean where a vast expanse of water is covered with plastic debris.
