Pipe Dream plot

In 1990, Theo Jansen made his first 'beach animal', a complex construction of PVC pipes that somewhat resembled an animal skeleton. It was supposed to be a walking skeleton, propelled by the wind. That first attempt failed, but in the meantime, the attentive art lover has been able to take extensive note of the walks of Jansen's wonderful creations along the Dutch coast.

The 'beach animals' of Theo Jansen are impressive as a mechanistic imitation of large, animal creatures, but just as Jansen is rather pretentious as an artist in the sense that he hopes that others will continue his work for hundreds of years after his death, the idea behind it is also pretentious: he insists on regarding his tinkering as an evolutionary process (learning by trial and error) with the aim that his works of art can sustain themselves, which in effect makes them real living creatures. That seems to me an unachievable dream, but he may be right that art is created when reality and dream merge.
